Overview

Jozani Forest is the largest area of nature forest on Zanzibar Island. Situated south of Chwaka Bay about 40 km from Stone Town on low-lying land, the area is prone to flooding, which nurtures a lush swamplike environment of moisture-loving trees and ferns. The whole area is protected as Jozani-Chwaka National Park, and is famously home to populations of Zanzibar red colobus monkey (an endangered species found only on Zanzibar) as well as other monkey species (like Zanzibar Sykes’ monkey), bushbabies, duikers and more than 40 species of birds.

With the total area of 50 km2 (19 sq mi) Jozani Forest is excellent home to many beautiful species of wildlife, birds and rare medicinal plants and natural Mangroves. The park is home to over 100 species of breathtaking exotic and migratory birds, such as guineafowl, coucals, doves, pigeons, turacos, cuckoos, swifts, lapwings, sandpipers, herons, egrets, bee-eaters, ducks, cormorants, ibises, vultures, kingfishers, owls, goshawks, woodpeckers, robins, swallows, starlings, weavers, and hornbills.

The park is home to over 50 species of butterflies, as well as beautiful and unique animals such as Sykes monkeys, bush babies, antelopes, squirrels, snakes, geckos, chameleons, squirrels, and red colobus monkeys. Jozani Forest is also a breeding ground for sea turtles, and giant tortoises. The flora of the forest is remarkable, as it is home to sycamores, mangroves, acacias, bamboos, jasmine, guava trees, dayflowers, swamp ferns, figs, forest olives, palm trees, mangroves ferns, and red mahoganies.
