After a 7am pick up from the hotel and a 2-hour drive to the Londorosi Gate in Mount Kilimanjaro National Park (2100m). After formalities, registrations, and a toilet break, Continue Drive through a rain forest to the Morum Barrier Gate / Morum Picnic site which is at 3400 metres of altitude. 

From Morum Picnic Site continue walk / hike to Shira 1 Camp, Lion Gorge and the foothills of the Shira Pinnacles. Kilimanjaro’s iconic snow-covered table top, Kibo Peak, should be visible from here, as well as neighbouring glaciers.

The route is offered at a minimum of five days, though six days is recommended when attempting this route. The Umbwe route should only be attempted by those who are very strong hikers and are confident in their ability to acclimatize.

The Marangu Route nick named (Coca Cola Route)is the oldest and most well established trekking route on Mount Kilimanjaro, and it remains extremely popular compare to others. This path provides trekkers with the classic Kilimanjaro climbing experience, offering sweeping views and a wonderful hiking adventure all the way to the summit of Uhuru Peak. That said, it also has some unique aspects that set it apart from any of the other routes as well, giving Marangu route a character and feeling that is entirely its own. A 6 day variant provides good time for acclimatization due to a rest day at Horombo Hut. 

The Rongai route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border, this route still experiences low crowds. Rongai has a more gradual slope than the other routes. It is the preferred route for those looking for an alternative to the popular Marangu route, for those who would like a more remote hike, and for those who are climbing during the rainy season (the north side receives less precipitation).

Rongai is a moderately difficult route, and is highly recommended, especially for those with less backpacking experience. Although the scenery is not as varied as the western routes, Rongai makes up for this by passing through true wilderness areas for nearly the entire way. Descent is made via the Marangu route. Rongai route can be done on a 6 or 7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb. The 6 day variation does not have an acclimatization day on day four at Mawenzi Turn Hut.

The Northern Circuit route is the newest route up Mount Kilimanjaro and arguably the best. That’s because it’s a combination of all of the best elements of the other routes with beautiful scenery, plenty of solitude, a healthy challenge, and the potential to spot wildlife, this is definitely the route for you.

The Northern Circuit route 2 follows the same route as Rongai route for the first few days, but rather than sticking to the south side of Kibo, it turns to the little-used northern trails instead. The route is also has the most acclimatization time and the highest summit success rate.

The Western Breach is the steepest, but shortest, of all the non-technical final ascents of Kibo, and should not be lightly undertaken. It can be approached from the Machame, Umbwe, Shira/Lemosho or northern circuit routes.

Any ascent of the Breach will involve a descent to the Mweka campsite and Mweka gate.

Following a rock fall in 2006 on the Western Breach in which a number of climbers were killed, the Kilimanjaro National Park closed the Western Breach route.

Mafia home of the whale shark and an underwater paradise is primarily known for its ocean glory, the Marine Park which was created to protect its reefs. The diving, fishing, and snorkeling here are the best in the entire region, infinitely better than those to be found on Zanzibar (although note that the beaches on the main island are not nearly as good as Zanzibar’s).

Snorkeling or Swimming with whale sharks is one of the best experiences Mafia Island has to offer. Whale Sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and their docile and curious nature make them a pleasure to swim with. It is a lifetime experience that you cannot miss. 

The best season begins from October to end of February when the “Dominos” (nickname for the Whale Sharks) flock to the archipelago to feast among plankton rich waters in large numbers before drifting back to the depths of the ocean. Whale sharks are not whales and are not your typical shark, It is a filter feeder and therefore has no teeth. They are the largest fish in the sea measuring up to 20m. Little is known about these gentle giants by scientists, which is what adds to the overwhelming feeling you have when you swim alongisde them. 

This tour starts early in the morning and will take between 2-5 hours. Whale sharks are wild animals so there is no guarantee that they will be found, however there is a great chance that they will. Mafia Island follows the “Code of Conduct” which is a set of guidelines used all over the world. Your guide will make you aware of these guidelines for safely interacting with these whales.

Humpback whales are one of the largest rorqual species; adults can grow up to 16 metres in length and weigh up to 36,000 kg. They are found all over the world and can migrate up to 25,000 km each year.

Catch the seasonal migration of Humpback Whales as they move between the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the cooler feeding grounds of the Southern Ocean. In late August to early October, they can be seen off Chole Bay and Ras Mkumbi returning southwards. The waters to the South of Mafia Island are an excellent area to watch the humpbacks as they make their way up and down the coast as part of their annual migration. The most breathtaking moments are watching them breach, throwing themselves out of the water to land with a tremendous splash. Humpback whales are magnificent creatures with surprising acrobatic moves!

Between June and September hundreds of baby turtles make their instinctive scramble from the white sandy beaches to the warm Indian Ocean waters. In Mafia it’s fortunate enough to be able to witness this natural spectacle from the Eastern beach of Juani, an island bursting with nature from the tiniest of butterflies to giant cascading trees. 

The turtle conservation programme of these amazing creatures, particularly the Hawksbill Turtle has been one of Mafia’s outstanding successes through the combined efforts of Sea Sense, local community and Mafia Island Marine Park since 2001.

The adventure starts with a lovely dhow trip across Chole Bay, landing on the shielded Western side of Juani Island. On arrival, a 45 minute walk across the island reveals the islands true beauty of the Island itself with towering trees and green foliage.

On the hatchling site we may experience the little hatchlings emerge from their sandy burrow, scrambling out of their nest, flapping their fins vivaciously, racing to reach the surf and start the next step of their incredible journey. It is a truly heart wrenching experience to watch these ancient reptiles fight for survival in their first moments among the living. After experiencing one of nature’s most harrowing hurdles, we make our way back.

Also Known as Kua Lagoon or Blue Lagoon hiding in a marine park, a beautiful lake, this is the best secret of the Mafia Island. The blue lagoon is a long channel linking the huge inland bay with the open sea that bisects the southern point of Juani. At the end of the channel is an enormous natural infinity pool whose level varies according to the tides. This excursion is the perfect late afternoon adventure suitable for everyone. The journey to the channel itself takes 30 minutes from the beach and boasts stunning views of the southern section of the archipelago. As you seem to sail endlessly with no channel in sight, all of a sudden a crack in the island comes into view. Bordered on either side with lush mangrove forests, the journey down the amazon-esque channel is filled with hues of green and blue and highlighted by the many bird species huddling on the banks of the water.

After a short journey, winding around azure corners, you end up at the end of the channel, flanked by small islets and the mainland of Juani on either side and a spectacular view of the fierce Indian Ocean in front. The blue lagoon has a welcoming, sandy bottom and shallow water making it the perfect place for a refreshing swim with unimaginable views. For the more adventurous among us, there is the possibility to take a short trek through Juani and come to just one of many natural pool’s that can be found. Here one can jump in the water with a mask and admire the dramatic underwater, algae-dominated landscape and quirky upside-down jellyfish.

Mange sandbank is located in south of Chole Bay. It is the most pristine patch of pure, white sand that only is exposed during low tide. This tiny patch of dreams is surrounded by stunning tropical reefs teaming with colourful corals and fish. It is possible, if you look hard enough over the expanse of aquamarine water, to see the trees from our mainland Tanzania. Normally, this is a full day trip that includes a light lunch and a shaded BBQ at the sandbank.

Start with a leisurely trip in a traditional dhow to the sandbank few kilometers south of Mafia Island. Enjoy snorkelling on the nearby reefs with colourful corals and a variety of fish species. Then for lunch, take a picnic on the sandbank with fire-cooked fish, salad, and pasta. Take a swim in the clear calm water, and enjoy another snorkel in the nearby reef.

Bwejuu Island is considered the most beautiful island in the archipelago and for very good reason. Just under three hours sail from Mafia Island Diving, the journey itself is a highlight, as you weave in and out of sandbanks, tropical reefs and local fishing canoes. Depending on the tide, adventure can start with a dive or snorkel on Bwejuu’s fringing reef. The dive itself is highlighted by a massive school of baraccuda, which you can see from the boat as they start to inspect the boat from just below the ocean’s surface. As you press on with the dive itself, you come across fields of whip coral and large boulder structures jutting up, just below the rippling sea, creating the perfect playgound for a variety of fish species.

As you move around the island heading south, ascending up into the shallows and you will see Mafia’s most spectacular reefs with pristine corals and interesting bommies absolutely teaming with fish. This coral garden is where snorkeling takes place within the marine park. Picnic lunch in the Island and afternoon return to Mafia, this expedition is only possible from October through to March.

Nestled amongst the overgrown forests in the South of Juani Island are a set of ruins, the last remnants of the ancient city of Kua dating back to the early 12th century. Kua is an identified archaeological site which still has no firm reasoning as to why all of a sudden the civilisation ceased to exist, although there are various legends. The destruction of Kua is said to have been by the sultan’s enemies, the Sakalava tribe from Madagascar during the fifteenth century. 

The ruins cover a large area of the South western side of Juani Island and are located close to the shore. As you wander between crumbling walls smothered by the roots of strangler figs, you will pass several mosques, a cemetery, a palace with large storeroom, a dispensary and a school, all which were funded by the then-lucrative trade in cowrie shells. From these one can tell that Kua was once a place of considerable local importance.

The city of Kua was established by settlers from Kilwa, and was heavily involved in trade. All over the ruins you can readily dig up pottery sherds, some dating several hundreds of years to Chinese and Persian origins. Vervet monkeys scamper among the fallen buildings and plenty of haunting cries from surrounding birds will add to the mysterious atmosphere, letting your imagination run wild. This is a wonderful excursion to plan for the late afternoon, when the afternoon light illuminates the ruins in a beautiful yet spooky ambience.

Fisherman Island is a beautiful small islet hidden on the North Eastern side of Chole Bay. Its name comes from the periodic presence of Mafian Fisherman who stop over to dry their catch before returning home. Fisherman Island is home to a beautiful beach, bordered on either side with rich mangroves. 

Riddled with shells, fisherman Island can only be reached on a high tide, making it an excellent alternative for the sandbank. Start with a journey out to one of Mafia’s stunning snorkel sites. After enjoying the marine park, we will make our way through an in-conspicous channel that slowly widens into a sheltered area of beautiful aquamarine water, topped off with our own private island for the afternoon.

On the Island itself it is possible to sunbathe, explore the mangroves, or swim in the crystal clear water just in front of your camp and have you hot or picnic lunch onsite. As the sun lowers in the sky, the ocean follows with it continue sail back to Mafia.
